Delayed hypersensitivity in the rabbit after injection of viable "NSU Corynebacteria".

چکیده

'NSU Corynebacteria' are commensals of the normal male and female urogenital tracts (Furness, Kamat, Kaminski, and Seebode, 1973). They are so called because they were first described in association with NSU (Fmrness and Csonka, 1966), and the term is retained so that they should not be confused with other diphtheroids, which in contrast are easily isolated on commercial media and are well-known commensals. Although commonly commensals, 'NSU Corynebacteria' have been isolate in pure culture from the epididymis of patients with acute epididymitis (Furness and others, 1971a, 1974) and from the bulbous urethra of patients with non-specific urethritis (NSU) (Furness and Csonka, 1966; Furness and others, 1971b). These reports suggest that some strains may cause disease while others are saprophytes. However, some of the conceivably pathogenic strains isolated from the epididymis of patients with epididymitis and the bulbous urethra of patients with NSU show characteristic biochemical reactions which differentiate them from the commensal 'NSU Corynebacteria' (Furness and others, 1973). Since Reiter's disease and chronic NSU have manifestations suggestive of an allergic syndrome, the ability of 'NSU Corynebacteria' to induce hypersensitivity and to produce antibodies in rabbits has been investigated, and the results are reported below.

Role of delayed hypersensitivity in blastomycosis of mice.

C57BL/6J mice rendered hypersensitive to Blastomyces dermatitidis were protected from the lethal effects of a blastomyces infection. This protection was observed following a lethal intraperitoneal challenge with viable cells 15 days after subcutaneous inoculation with 3.9 x 10(4) viable cells. Delayed hypersensitivity was induced in C57 mice by two injections of Merthiolate-killed cells in adju...

Cell-mediated hypersensitivity in rabbits infected with Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma rhodesiense.

Animals infected with strains of Trypanosoma brucei and T. rhodesiense exhibited cutaneous hypersensitivity to intradermal administration of antigen. This reactivity was of two types, an Arthus-type, antibody-mediated reaction which reached maximum intensity 4 hr after injection and a delayed-type, cell-mediated reaction which reached maximum intensity 24 hr after injection. This delayed-type h...

Oral tolerance for delayed type hypersensitivity contribution of local and peripheral mechanisms

Oral tolerance is a physiological immune mechanism, which controls the outcome of deleterious hypersensitivity reactions to environmental antigens absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, and maintains homeostasis. Using a mouse model of oral tolerance of delayed type hypersensitivity to contact allergens, i.e. haptens, we have examined the mechanisms involved in the induction of oral toler...

Cyclooxygense-1 inhibition delays hypersensitivity to nerve injury

Despite the important role of both cyclooxygenase (COX) isoforms (i.e. COX-1 and COX-2) in maintenance of hypersensitivity following peripheral nerve injury, their role in the development of neuropathic pain is not clear. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of COX inhibitors to address the potential role of COX isozymes in the development of neuropathic pain in rats after c...

Relationship between tuberculin hypersensitivity and cellular immunity to infection in mice vaccinated with viable attenuated Mycobacterial cells or with Mycobacterial ribonucleic acid preparations.

The migration inhibition technique has been used to study delayed hypersensitivity in vitro by using peritoneal exudate cells and splenic lymphocytes from mice vaccinated with viable cells of the attenuated H37Ra strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and from mice vaccinated with ribonucleic acid (myc RNA) preparations obtained from viable mycobacterial cells of the same strain. Inhibition of ma...
